    A Small Target Neutrino Deep-Inelastic Scattering Experiment at the First Muon Collider

    Several different scenarios for neutrino scattering experiments using a neutrino beam from the muon collider complex are discussed. The physics reach of a neutrino experiment at the front end of a muon collider is shown to extend far beyond that of current neutrino experiments, since the high intensity neutrino beams one would see at the muon collider allow for a large flexibility in choosing neutrino targets.     The question of citation behavior has always intrigued scientists from various disciplines. While general citation patterns have been widely studied in the literature we develop the notion of citation projection graphs by investigating the citations among the publications that a given paper cites. We investigate how patterns of citations vary between various scientific disciplines and how such patterns reflect the scientific impact of the paper. We find that idiosyncratic citation patterns are characteristic for low impact papers; while narrow, discipline-focused citation patterns are common for medium impact papers. Our results show that crossing-community, or bridging citation patters are high risk and high reward since such patterns are characteristic for both low and high impact papers. Last, we observe that recently citation networks are trending toward more bridging and interdisciplinary forms.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    A concept for reducing oceanic separation minima through the use of a TCAS-derived CDTI

    A concept for using a cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI), as derived from a modified version of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System 2 (TCAS 2), to support reductions in air traffic separation minima for an oceanic track system is presented. The concept, and the TCAS modifications required to support it, are described. The feasibility of the concept is examined from a number of standpoints, including expected benefits, maximum alert rates, and possible transition strategies. Various implementation issues are analyzed. Pilot procedures are suggested for dealing with alert situations. Possible variations of the concept are also examined. Finally, recommendations are presented for other studies and simulation experiments which can be used to further verify the feasibility of the concept

The statutes of Kansas and their application and function show that this office is primarily the same today as it was in England in the seventeenth century. A study of the sheriff\u27s office relates that the powers and duties are similar in Ellis county to those in England when the sheriff was a servant of the King and his court. Frequent changes have been made but the facts still remain that one of the main defects is due to the lack of responsibility, improper coordination, and the lack of integration between the state and the county. Also that some system of unified policing is necessary in view of changing conditions in the field of law enforcement and crime prevention

The large, long-lived black oystercatcher is a shorebird that defends a composite breeding territory for foraging in the intertidal zone and nesting in the immediate upland. Predation on young is a major source of mortality for many bird species, including black oystercatcher. As these are long-lived birds with many reproductive opportunities, adult survival, associated with forage resources, is expected to be more important in habitat use than less-predictable breeding success. To identify which factors most influence black oystercatcher breeding territory use, logistic regression models were developed and tested in south-central Alaska and tested in southeast Alaska. Intertidal community composition was sampled at a subset of sites. All known breeding sites in Kenai Fjords National Park and western Prince William Sound, plus sites in southeast Alaska, were matched with available breeding sites based on substrate and exposure classifications. Two factors available breeding related to predation avoidance, greater distance to vegetation and isolation from the mainland, were the most important variables in habitat models. Intertidal community composition did not vary between known breeding and available breeding sites. This suggests black oystercatchers choose breeding territories that reduce predation risk, contrary to expectations

    Validation of Passive Air Sampling Monitors Onboard United States Navy Submarines

    An operating submarine creates a unique air quality mixture of compounds that result from a combination of human metabolism, construction materials, materials brought onboard and compounds created through the interaction of ship systems. A comprehensive study of submarine atmospheres is ongoing during deployments of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. As part of the overall effort, a paired air sampling comparison field validation was conducted to compare the air sampling effectiveness of passive diffusive monitors compared to more traditional active air sampling methods when sampling for acrolein, formaldehyde and ozone in the enclosed submarine atmosphere. Acrolein monitors containing 2-hydroxymethylpiperidine (HMP) impregnated glass fibers and 2-HMP silica gel as sorbent media, formaldehyde monitors containing adsorbing media of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) and ozone monitors with a sorbent bed of nitrite impregnated glass fibers were evaluated. Active sampling was conducted in accordance with NIOSH Method 2501, NIOSH Method 2016 and OSHA Method ID 214 for acrolein, formaldehyde and ozone respectively. Extended sampling periods ranging from 14 to 28 days for active sampling methods and 28 days for passive monitors were necessary due to the trace airborne concentration levels of these airborne contaminants. Validation tests of the resulting active and passive air sampling data indicated that the acrolein, formaldehyde and ozone passive monitors were not validated to sample the very low concentrations of these contaminants aboard U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Depending on the airborne contaminant, the passive monitors had an average estimated accuracy ranging from ±82.1% to ±237.4% and log(10) transformed correlation coefficients ranging from 0.0043 to 0.5289 (r2 = 0.0043–0.5289). Although the passive monitors as tested were not validated for the enclosed submarine atmosphere, minor modifications to the passive monitors and improved laboratory analytical sensitivity will likely improve their effectiveness and additional validation testing conducted using the guidelines provided by this study is warranted

    The Real Time Data System (RTDS) Project was undertaken in 1987 to introduce new concepts and technologies for advanced automation into the Mission Control Center environment at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The project's emphasis is on producing advanced near-operational prototype systems that are developed using a rapid, interactive method and are used by flight controllers during actual Shuttle missions. In most cases the prototype applications have been of such quality and utility that they have been converted to production status. A key ingredient has been an integrated team of software engineers and flight controllers working together to quickly evolve the demonstration systems
